A Bit of a Fiddle in C#m (34K)
GM |
This composition was produced out of various 'cut-ups' resulting from several sessions with 'Techno Toys Seq-303' Program (sadly no longer available). I was looking to
achieve the feel of a modern 'avant-garde' string quartet with contrasting note 'textures' split into several short sections. I merged approximately 20 x short MIDI files from Seq-303 into Cakewalk Pro
and then proceeded to assemble/dis-assemble the piece until I was happy with the result. - Geoff. Nossiter

PianoFuse (22K)
GM |
Almost entirely achieved within the brilliant Arp-X8 MIDI Arpeggiator Application from Techno Toys. I devised various arpeggiator patterns within Arp-X8 and then played the
entire performance 'live' exporting the resultant MIDI file into Cakewalk for final editing. - Geoff. Nossiter

Downpouring (58K)
XG/GM |
The basic sequence was generated by Seq-303, after first specifying pitch set, (the raag scale), tempo, dynamics, note durations and panning. The resulting MIDI file was
imported into Notator Logic and cut up into shorter fragments, which were then assigned to several tracks/channels and further edited, mainly by transposing and time stretching or contracting. The Yamaha
MU-10 is the preferred XG module. - Carey Nutman

South Downs Study (54K)
XG/GM |
Again composed using Seq-303 and Notator Logic. Again for the MU-10. This time the pitch set was a series of notes lifted from the score of John Casken's orchestral work
" Orion Over Farne ". - Carey Nutman

Grey to Yellow (11K)
XG/GM |
A piano study that I composed some years ago (when studying at Huddersfield). The harmony moves from darkness to light, from grey to yellow. It also works quite well with a
marimba voice but would be impossible to play on marimba. - Carey Nutman

GelisGlide (24K)
XG only |
This composition just evolved out of some of the "hidden" sound capabilities of the XG format by accessing the 'QS' sound banks. The sounds in use here are typical
of those used by Vangelis (cica. Blade Runner). Please note: a delay at the start of this MIDI, for approximately 5 seconds, occurs as a large chunk of sysex data is transmitted to your device. ONLY
sounds correct on FULLY implemented XG cards and modules ie. DB50XG, MU-10 etc. - Geoff. Nossiter

Intremezzo (78K)
GM |
O.K. the name is a pun. It looks like INTERMEZZO spelled wrongly, but it is really a PRESTO. I started writing this piece on holiday in Tremezzo on Lake Como, Italy. The
Italians are always dashing around on their motor bikes and seem to have mobile phones perpetually glued to their ears. Maybe a better title would be PERPETUAL MOBILE. - Carey Nutman

GuitarFuse 1 (22K)
GM |
Here's another 'cut-n-paste' piece from various sections of a longer song produced with Arp-X8. However, this time I also made some effort to inject a bit of 'natural
sounding hesitation' into some of the tracks to give more of an impression of a number of live guitar players. - Geoff. Nossiter

Log-A-Rythm (38K)
XG/GM |
This is basically a study in cross rhythms. Six virtual percussionists have to hit lots of pieces of wood (think of a xylophone as an assortment of log drums) in various
complex rhythms, and they have to walk about the stage as they play. – Carey Nutman

Mercury 2 (88K)
XG/GM |
Mercury 2" is a simple 3-part composition. It is a mensural canon, or canon by diminution. Part 1 was through-composed. I did this quite quickly
because the actual "tune" was of no great interest. What did interest me was the interaction of the three parts. Part 2 is mostly part 1 played twice at double speed. Part 3 is mostly
part 1 played three times at triple speed. Certain sections were erased to emphasise the remaining solos or duos. It's amazing how this simple process can produce, by accident, connections in the
mind which do not really exist. A more complex texture emerges. A sort of psychoacoustic "supermusic" is created by our brains. We hear melodies that were never written. (Tchaikovsky did a
similar thing in the Pathétique Symphony.) - Carey Nutman

Colour Theory
XG MIDI Album |
An album of seven pieces derived from experiments with a rather wonderful 'generative music program' called “Gingerbread" by Phil Thompson <see my links page>.
Each is constructed out of selective 'cut-ups' from the original Gingerbread file and through a process of ‘trial and error’ rearranged into a final piece. - Geoff. Nossiter
