What’s on my hard disk? Here’s a list of my favourite music making applications

Cakewalk Sonar 7 Producer Edition As a long-time user of
Cakewalk DAWS (I’ve been with them since just about the start) I really think they’ve done a great job in progressing the application. Sonar 7 is a brilliantly comprehensive and professional app that
provides, in addition to a superb DAW environment, mastering effects, soft synths (including the full version of Z3ta+, light versions of both Rapture and Dimension, Pentagon I, PSYN II, RXP groove
instrument with REX file support and more), Audiosnap, ACT technology, realtime pitch-shifting and wave-form editing inside the application. Here’s a short track made with some of the included soft
synths and effects - mostly Z3ta+ & Pentagon 1 - Quadruplex.

Cakewalk DimensionPro Soft Synth. A highly acclaimed synth that combines real instruments and an advanced synthesis engine to provide truly
stunning sounds. It comes with a comprehensive sound-set and there are more to download for free. I use this baby most of the time. This short track was constructed entirely with dimension (10 instances)
with slightly tweaked pre-sets and no additional effects other than a little bit of ‘Boost’ on the master output. Echoes On A Landscape.

Cakewalk Rapture Soft Synth. Again another solid synth with extensive rhythmic modulation possibilities with a super sound engine with a
non-aliasing high-resolution resampling engine. Here’s a quick demo track using eight instances of Rapture with a single ‘glitchy’ drum track I created in Reaktor Summer
Camp.

Native Instruments Reaktor 5. I’ve been a user of Reaktor since
version 4 and it’s another of my constant sources for unique sounds and processing options from quirky to bizarre. Many of the sounds featured on my track Grains and Fragments were produced in
Reaktor. Here’s a couple of little oddities created entirely with various Reaktor modules, cut up, edited and mixed in Sonar. The second is particularly effective listened to loud on headphones - I
guarantee you will never be quite the same person as you were before! Strange Little Thing Even Stranger Little Things .

Wusikstation VSTi V4 (soon to be V5). One of the most popular
Sampler/Rompler soft synths out there. And, it’s from a small but capable producer (WilliamK). With It’s high feature count (a lot of which have been implemented after requests by a growing and
enthusiastic user base), shiny new interface, easier pre-set loading, great sound and much more, no wonder Its rated so highly by so many computer based musicians. From Ambient to Techno, it covers
virtually any style of music.
